Time-sensitive delivery of multi-storey accommodation
The Northgate Studios new build project in Chester involved the manufacture, supply and install of 150 student residence to include a kitchen, study and sleeping area. The project started in April 2018 and was completed in August 2018.
The project was a complete ground-up construction with a tight timescale, as the student-accommodation needed to be completed ready for students to move in at the start of the new academic year.
The five-storey accommodation was to be made up of 150 open-plan student dorm rooms, made up of bedrooms and kitchen areas. There was a focus on longevity, as ensuring furniture is built to last was a crucial consideration knowing that dorms would be used by multiple occupants over the years.
Detailed planning with budget and quality in mind
During the early stages of the project, we hosted a design team meeting at our Yorkshire factory with the investors, main contractor and cost consultants. This allowed us to ensure that our plans met with the design brief, were in line with the quality requirements and stayed on budget.
We were then able to create the designs for the bedrooms and kitchens, which featured a mixture of fitted and loose furniture solutions. All of the furniture was manufactured to our high standards to ensure they would last for as long as possible.
The budget restraints meant that we opted for simple, hardwearing finishes that would be practical for the accommodation and continue to look good even after multiple occupants.
As well as our own furniture, we also sourced white goods to fit with our designs.
Multiphase, on time installation
Due to the time-critical nature of the project, the installation of the accommodation was multiphase.
We worked floor by floor, completing one before moving onto the next. This enabled us to fully install all of the dorm rooms across all five storeys on time so the accommodation was ready for the start of the new university year.
